Opening Wine

By Wini Moranville

What's the best corkscrew? The corkscrew you like best. When I'm just opening one bottle for an evening meal, the classic waiter's corkscrew works for me.

However, when it's time to open a slew of wines for a party or a tasting, that's when I pull out the Screwpull. Many models are available, but my favorite is the sleek LM-400, which gets a lot of bottles opened fast.

I appreciate the slick one-two action of pulling the cork. You simply grip the Screwpull over the bottle and squeeze the bottom while pulling the lever over the top of the bottle.

I've found that other styles of these contraptions require some major upper-body strength. Not this one. Rather than the usual knockdown, drag-out fight I have with a cork, it elegantly glides out at my command. Available at amazon.com.
